Announcing a New Online Resource for Employers from Career and Workplace Resources
The Career and Workplace Resources (CWR) branch is pleased to announce a new online resource in the HR Series for Employers, Thinking About Layoffs? What You Need to Know Before Letting People Go.
This online publication is for employers, managers and supervisors who are contemplating laying off staff. It indicates why downsizing isn’t always the best solution and offers a number of possible cost-cutting alternatives. And, if layoffs are inevitable, it outlines best practices and legal considerations when letting people go. It also includes ways to motivate remaining staff and includes additional resources to help employers through the process. Also available is a separate PDF of an Employment Termination Checklist.
Thinking About Layoffs? is a revision of An Employer’s Guide to Workforce Adjustment which was originally produced by NE/NW regions to help employers in the forest industry deal with layoffs. Although many regions in the province are currently experiencing economic growth, employers continue to lay off staff for a variety of reasons. CWR has updated and revised the publication to make it more provincial in scope and to assist employers who may be considering layoffs in the future.
Thinking About Layoffs? can be downloaded from the Alberta Learning Information Service (ALIS) website at alis.alberta.ca/publications. A print edition of this publication will be released in the summer of 2012. An email announcement will go out when it is available for you to order.
